What is Human resource management?
Human resources management (HRM) is a management function concerned with hiring, motivating and maintaining people in an organization. It focuses on people in organizations. Human resource management is designing management systems to ensure that human talent is used effectively and efficiently to accomplish organizational goals.
According to the Invancevich and Glueck, “HRM is concerned with the most effective use of people to achieve organizational and individual goals. It is the way of managing people at work, so that they give their best to the organization”.
According to Dessler (2008) the policies and practices involved in carrying out the “people” or human resource aspects of a management position, including recruiting, screening, training, rewarding, and appraising comprises of HRM.
The scope of HRM is a vast area. And all the activities related to life of worker in the organization is depend on the quality of HRM. HRM activities include HR planning, job analysis, job design, employee hiring, employee and executive remuneration, employee motivation, employee maintenance, industrial relations and prospects of HRM.

People are the main workforce in the hospitality industry. It makes the role of human resources critical to this hospitality industry. In this industry, one of the biggest difficulties is employee turnover and satisfaction. Hence it is important to maintain their well-being in order to improve their performance in the organization in a positive way. Human resources department oversee recruiting, interviewing and hiring of staff and serve as the bridge between management and employees.
Organizations in the hospitality industry face a competitive environment wherein human resource management (HRM). It plays a critical role in their success and survival. Unlike most other industries, the products of organizations in the hospitality industry are service experiences, which are mostly intangible and highly dependent on face-to-face interactions between employees and customers. Therefore, human resources play a key role in service quality, customer loyalty and satisfaction and other measures of firm performance (Baum, 2015; Tracey, 2014). Strategic HRM on hospitality has grown over past two decades.
Strategic HRM focuses on how HRM systems can create a competitive advantage in hospitality industry. Hospitality industry depend on two vital factor, it is a customer driven and quality-focused industry. The quality of service offered is equally dependent on the attitudes of the staff as on their skills. Hence it is responsibility HR department to hire the right staff to the task and focus on improving their skills by arranging proper training and development programs.
Why SHRM is important in hospitality industry ?
- Assisting the organization in obtaining the right number and types of employees to fulfill its strategic and operational goals.
- Developing programs to meet the economic, psychological, and social needs of the employees and helping the organization to retain the productive employees.
- When Strategic policies are implemented to motivate employees through rewards, reduce staff turnover.
- In order to achieve set targets, HR needs strategic planning to unify all the departments towards achieving the common goal in the organization.
- Create a unique work culture and maintain workplace diversity.
- Helping to create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment.
- To provide organization with well-trained and well-motivated employees.
- To increase the employees satisfaction and self-actualization
- To develop and maintain the quality of work life
- To communicate HR policies to all employees.
- To help maintain ethical polices and behavior
For instance, Marriott international is largest hotel chain in the world. The
HR practices endearing by the Marriott Hotels makes its employees loyal towards
the Group and motivate them to continue working with them, Marriott follows
some endearing human resource practices, like treating even junior associates
(the internal term for employees) to a one-night stay in a Marriott hotel, gift
vouchers to dine in hotel’s restaurants on their birthdays, with their
families. It makes for a great birthday present and has the added advantage of
giving the youngsters a feel of what it's like to be on the other side of the
table, as a guest.

Attitudes of the staff depends on soft skills, That's why HRM must think beyond they're common HR practices and think strategically haired correct employees because you can teach them to Transferable/Functional & Knowledge-based skills, but you cant teach soft skills. Because its Developed from childhood and through life experience.

I agree that usually soft skills develop from childhood and through life experiences. However, my opinion is if an organization has a strategic learning and development process in place, there is a chance of changing employee’s attitudes towards to works.
DeleteEmployee satisfaction is a very important factor in the hospitility sector. Because the development of the organization depends on the commitment of the employee. Therefore, human resource management is a very important aspect in the hotel industry. It is very important that HRM pays more attention to the employees of the organization. As you mentioned, good HRM steering may have contributed to the success of the Marriott hotel chain.

That’s why HR department plays a huge role in hospitality industry in order to retain talented employees. Satisfaction is influenced by the value of services, which is created by satisfied, loyal and productive employees. -HRM practices, employee satisfaction, and customer satisfaction - Typically, satisfied employees are loyal and productive employees. Employee loyalty increases as these individuals become more satisfied with their job and are allowed to take care of customers.
-Human resources planning: Through job analysis and strategic planning, including assessment of the environment and projections for future business, organizations can forecast short- and long-term staffing needs and the strategic use of the human resource functions to meet those needs.
-Job analyses and job descriptions: Job analyses are used to define the tasks and responsibilities involved in each job and to determine the qualifications required to successfully fulfill the job requirements. Job descriptions are the resulting documents. They provide a basis for all other HR functions.
-Recruitment: Various methods are used to attract suitable applicants from labor pools.
-Selection: The selection process is used to hire the best people into the positions for which they are most suited.
-Orientation: A new employee’s initial introduction to the company provides essential information and creates a positive first impression.
-Training and development: These functions facilitate the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for staff to perform in their current position and/or to prepare for advancement.
-Compensation, benefits, and recognition: Businesses need to determine appropriate types and levels of remuneration and incentives, including wages, formal benefits, and perquisites (perks).
-Performance management: Providing feedback to employees on their work performance encourages and supports improvement. Also included in performance management is coaching. Progressive discipline is a separate process intended as a formal corrective process to address unsatisfactory behavior or job performance.
Hospitality industry in a country like Sri Lanka, is very crucial and aught be properly addressed. Customer enlightenment as well as the employee satisfaction are two main pillars that industry excellence is based on. HRM is to reinforce the organization in every perspective according to current volatile competitive industry environment. This is one of prominent sectors which earns foreign exchange to the country. Since hospitality industry in Sri Lanka should always be innovative and must change change their approach in line with complex customer requirements. For catering to such a quarter, employee satisfaction of the industry should be in optimum level. So HRM has the paramount responsibility of nurturing that contentment within the workforce.

Hence the hospitality industry has been adopted according to customer requirements. In order to cater such requirements, employee’s satisfaction is very important to retain employees in the organizations. The hospitality industry is characterized by the complexity of managing guest experiences, which forces human resources managers to find new ways of managing relationships with employees and guests. Hence the organization should use proactive strategies to combat on employee satisfaction challenge at every step, starting from hiring.
DeleteAs you mentioned one of the main responsibility of HR is providing organization with well trained staff. In hospitality industry, they have own culture with different customs. For an example when somebody serves food for a guest there is a special way to serve that. Therefore, before engaging with the customers employees should have good knowledge about all these practices. So I think well trained staffs are one of the main sources to get easiest recommendations from the customers regarding their company.
